Facing a reported 100-million-dollar revenue shortfall after federal Medicaid reimbursement cuts, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte is expanding into aesthetic medicine, offering Botox injections, IV hydration, and soon dermal fillers and laser hair removal as part of a newly launched service line intended to draw in cash pay patients.

Leaders at the affiliate say the initiative is designed to keep clinic doors open. The expansion comes after a year in which more than 50 Planned Parenthood clinics nationwide closed, and Mar Monte itself shuttered five locations, laid off 15 percent of its workforce, and ended a family medicine program, according to Allure’s reporting.

The Northern California and Nevada affiliate, which operates 30 clinics, has already begun providing Botox at a Sacramento location where units are priced at $9, roughly 25 percent below nearby medical spa rates, The Wall Street Journal reported. Botox and fillers allow these clinics an opportunity to generate cash revenue with no insurance billing, helping to reduce reliance on government funding.

Injectables such botulinum toxins and hyaluronic acid dermal filler require proper licensure, delegation, and supervision.
