  • What the final version of the law contains
  • When the new law takes effect
  • What still needs clarification
  • The rule-making/finalization process
  • What steps our industry can take

Why does this bill matter? It's the first of a series of nearly identical bills to passbills that would also regulate GLP-1s and medical spas in Iowa, Florida, Arizona and Colorado. Massachusetts has also introduced legislation to regulate medical spas, but is taking a different approach. Learn about these bills and other med spa legislative efforts when you explore AmSpa's Legal Updates.

This webinar will review the enrolled version of SB 282, identify operational concerns, clarify areas of uncertainty, and discuss guidance and potential advocacy strategies with AmSpa. Here's what Indiana med spas are wondering:

  • Responsible practitioner: What license the responsible practitioner needs, how many locations they can oversee, how this impacts collaboration agreements.
  • Documentation: How long a "sufficient amount of time" is for the responsible practitioner to be present, and how to document their presence.
  • Defining med spas: What qualifies as a medical spa vs. physician office, and the impact of being physician-owned.
  • Service scope: Which clinics are covered by the ruling: IV therapy clinics? Weight loss clinics? Laser clinics?
  • Adverse event reporting: What complications qualify as a serious adverse event and must be reported within 15 days.
  • Enforcement: How compliance with this regulation will be monitored, and which board will primarily regulate medical spas.
  • Location: What the state boards are staying about acceptable primary locations and the possibility of registering off-site events.
  • Next steps: What parts of the law will likely be clarified through rulemaking, what issues may require legislative amendments and how AmSpa plans to assist.

SB 282 in Its Final Form

In the enrolled version, Indiana Senate Bill 282 regulates the compounding of drugs and establishes registration requirements of med spas.

This bill establishes comprehensive requirements for drug compounding using bulk drug substances and directs specified state agencies to publish twice annual reports on drug compounding and its associated risks and benefits. Beginning January 1, 2027, it requires medical spas to register with the medical board, which must maintain a public database of registered facilities and which may investigate responsible practitioners and refer substantiated violations to their governing licensing boards. Each medical spa must designate a responsible practitioner who meets defined qualifications and fulfills specific oversight duties. Medical spas must also report serious adverse events to the board. The bill also restricts medical spas from providing health care, cosmetic, or lifestyle treatments outside the registered spa location, and requires compliance with existing advertising regulations.

Key timelines:

  • July 1, 2026 – Law takes effect
  • October 1, 2026 – Registration process created
  • January 1, 2027 – Medical spa registration required

What the bill regulates:

  • Medical spa registration
  • Responsible practitioner oversight
  • Adverse event reporting
  • Location restrictions
  • State reporting and oversight
