A study by JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery designated micro-focused ultrasound (MFU) a safe treatment to Micro-focused Ultrasound Safe for Darker Skin Typestighten and lift skin on the face and neck of darker skin types.

Testing MFU’s Safety for Improvement
MFU with ultrasound visualization is a system developed to treat lax, aging skin. Previous trials have proven the system to be a safe and efficient non-invasive esthetic treatment.

A non-randomized trail in 52 patients—35 black and 51 being women—was performed to demonstrate the safety of MFU for improving laxity of the skin in adults with darker skin types, specifically Fitzpatrick skin types III to VI.

The trial was performed by Monte O. Harris, M.D., Center for Aesthetic Modernism, Chevy Chase, M.D.; and Hema A. Sundaram, M.D., Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery in Rockville, Maryland and Fairfax, Virginia.

Outcome in Adverse Events
After 90 days without complications, the authors reported the treatment resulted in:

Mild edema (swelling),
Welts and
Moderately severe prolonged erythema (reddening of the skin).
