Employer Alert: Key Federal Employment Law Updates For 2017

2017 is expected to be a busy year for the employment law sector. Recent employment law developments on both the state and federal level are sure to have a significant impact on employers in 2017.

A few of the key updates to federal employment laws that go into effect this year include The Defend Trade Secrets Act, changes to paid sick leave and minimum wage laws for federal contractors, and new I-9 forms for employment verification.

First, The Defend Trade Secrets Act (“DTSA”), which actually became effective in 2016, federalizes trade secret protection but preserves state law trade secret protections. The Act provides a uniform definition of trade secrets, a uniform standard for misappropriation of trade secrets, nationwide service of process, and nationwide execution of judgments. Employers should update handbooks, as well as confidentiality and proprietary agreements, to ensure compliance with the DTSA.
