New Year, New Regulations for Illinois Controlled Substances Prescribers

In an effort to combat the growing opioid crises, the State of Illinois recently passed into law a regulation that establishes a comprehensive prescription monitoring program. The law, effective January 1 of this year, requires anyone with a controlled substances license to register with the newly launched Illinois Prescription Monitoring Program Website, found at ilpmp.org. The new law also requires any prescriber who is prescribing opioids to a patient for the first time to check with the online registry to determine whether the patient appears to be doctor shopping.
