California Mandates New Security Features For Prescription Pads

Effective January 1, 2019, all written prescriptions in California will need to be made on new prescription pads that incorporate a number of security features. The California Board of Medicine released a memo to provide information on the requirements. As the memo mentions, old prescription pads are not grandfathered under the new law, so pharmacists are now only able to accept written prescriptions on the new secured pads. The new pads can only be obtained from certain printers approved by the California Department of Justice. A list of the approved printers and their contact information is available here on the Attorney General’s website. If you are a California prescriber and do not yet have your new secure pad, there are a few options; the Board of Medicine’s memo notes that electronic prescriptions are unaffected and that a few exemptions exist that might allow prescriptions to get filled in the short term.
